When people decide to purchase a new mattress they often undervalue the importance of their decision and end up with a product that not only leaves them dissatisfied but potentially in pain for several years. When you consider that most people spend more time on their mattress than they do at work it makes sense that the mattress buying process should take time even a lot of time.

So why do more people choose memory mattresses over the standard spring mattresses?

Not Knowing Your Sleep Type - We all sleep differently and the odds are good that you sleep differently from your partner as well. This means you must speak your piece and not settle with the all-too-common "Im happy with whatever you like honey" response. By letting your salesperson know what your individual sleep style is he can better recommend a product that will keep both you and your partner happy. The most important part is that weight difference usually requires different mattress firmness to feel comfortable. The Dorsal mattress and Dynamic Slats systems recognize just how individualized your sleep style can be and they can help provide different mattress core within a mattress for people who share their mattress with a partner.

There have been comparisons made between memory foam mattresses and spring mattresses and a lot of people could attest that they found sleeping on memory foam mattresses to be better. Lying on a spring mattress does feel nice but when it comes to body contouring as well as spinal support a spring mattress do not even comes close to what the memory foam mattress could give. When you use a spring mattress your body conforms to it. While your weight is on the spring mattress the springs exert a resisting force against your body. A spring mattress relies only on a varied number of springs that are pushing back against you with all of them having the same force. Since your body does not push evenly against those springs it is impossible for you to get proper support. And because of this and the fact that you are the one who is adjusting to the spring mattresss shape your pressure points will lead to poor blood circulation and you would probably be complaining about body pains or sore muscles or stiffness when you wake up in the morning.

Not Testing the Mattress... Properly - Too often in the retail world we see people lean on the mattress with their hand then lay down... on their back! Statistically most people sleep on their side so it is amazing to see so many people testing mattresses on their back. Regardless you will not be one these sudden-back-sleepers in the showroom after reading this. Make sure to take the few minutes to test the mattress in the position you sleep in while on your mattress at home. (Need a pillow? Ask for one even a semi-qualified salesperson will gladly offer one to help make your testing experience more realistic).

When it comes to maintenance a spring mattress has to be rotated once in a while preferably once every three months. This is done to even the wear and it is important that you avoid bending or folding the mattress. With a memory foam mattress on the other hand you do not have to flip it over or rotate it: it virtually requires no maintenance.

The Warranty. The best way to protect your mattress purchase is to make sure it comes with a warranty. A typical warranty will last between 10 and 20 years. They basically cover any flaws in the mattress. If the construction is faulty or the materials are abnormally inadequate then you should be covered. Adjustable beds water beds and airbeds will also have warranties on the various parts such as the motor or the controls. Keep in mind the warranty will not cover the bed for normal deterioration.
