How Do I Select a Mattress? Before shopping for a mattress you need to arm yourself with pertinent information. First determine what type of bed is best for you. Do you like soft or hard beds? Would you prefer a standard mattress or a foam mattress? If you are not sure go try out a few different mattress types. Second consider your budget. This is not a purchase you want to scrimp on as a poor nights sleep can affect your whole day. Try to get as much value as you can for your budget. Finally size is a very important factor especially if there is more than one person sleeping in the bed. Ideally you should both be able to lie on the bed with your arms behind your heads and not touch. A bed needs to be 10-15 cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in that bed. Also pay attention to the height. Lower beds can be easy to get into but harder to get out of. High beds can be hard to get into especially for shorter people but very easy to hop out of in the morning.

Not Taking Care of The Mattress - While it is true that the salesperson encouraging you to add a mattress protector to your purchase is indeed an "upsell" these protectors are essential gear for your mattress. Not only will they keep your mattress isolated from unwanted spills or body fluids (most people sweat while they sleep) it will avoid staining and thereby keep the mattress warranty valid should you ever need to make a claim. Just make sure your mattress protector will have a similar property as your mattress such as good air circulation. Taking care of your mattress is as important as maintaining your vehicle - not only good for the warranty but for the general performance as well. Keep that in mind.

Not Testing the Mattress... Properly - Too often in the retail world we see people lean on the mattress with their hand then lay down... on their back! Statistically most people sleep on their side so it is amazing to see so many people testing mattresses on their back. Regardless you will not be one these sudden-back-sleepers in the showroom after reading this. Make sure to take the few minutes to test the mattress in the position you sleep in while on your mattress at home. (Need a pillow? Ask for one even a semi-qualified salesperson will gladly offer one to help make your testing experience more realistic).

The Exterior of a Mattress. The mattress exterior is called ticking. Visually it is really not too important to select a "pretty" mattress as it will be covered most of the time. Instead you want to make sure the ticking is sturdy and well made and not prone to ripping. The higher quality ticking is made of material that is knitted or woven using cotton or viscose yarn. Cheaper mattresses are made of polypropylene or polyester. The cheapest mattresses are made of stitchbond or bonded cloth. Manufacturers now make external mattress covers with special features such as anti-allergy anti-bacterial and anti-static. They may be resistant to staining water and fire. Amazingly enough there are even mattresses that give off different scents conducive to a good nights sleep.

The firmness of a memory foam mattress is used in defining comfort. A memory foam mattress can be firm to supple. Because your weight is distributed evenly over a memory foam mattress you get a firm feeling without your hips back and joints being compromised. And because a memory foam mattress adapts to your body heat your body gets the cradling support it requires. Almost every Memory Foam Mattress is temperature sensitive. At lower temperatures the mattress is firmer or more viscous while at higher temperatures the memory foam mattress is softer making the mattress more comforting as it is more elastic. The mattresss temperature sensitivity is responsible for the melting feeling you have whenever you are lying on it and this accentuates the foams molding affect. This is another thing that a spring mattress does not have. A spring mattress does not react to the heat of the users body.

The method of manufacture of distinctive varieties of latex rubber foam mattress also vary from each other type. Within the alternative varieties of fabrication process used one of the most frequently used is the "Talalay" manufacturing process. Using this is thought to be the most forward-looking manufacturing process in latex bed making. In this system the mold is initially filled using the latex mixture. Subsequently it is passed via a frothing process to produce the foam. Afterward a freezing process is used to strengthen the stability and durability of every latex foam mattress. But this process of manufacture being the most labor intensive in addition adds to the price of this kind of mattress pad or mattress topper.
