Community Workshops

Residents of Main Square are invited to join in FREE creative workshops as part of the Main Squared festival, happening from August 26 to September 3.

The workshops will engage your creativity in a welcoming and casual atmosphere. No experience is required and all supplies will be provided. Learn a new artistic skill, practice an existing one, and explore your talents!

All workshops will be held in the space beside the rental office (the old travel agency) unless otherwise noted. Food will be provided for participants. All ages are welcome.

Story Sticks: Monday, July 10, 4–7 PM

Artist: Pamela Schuller
Workshop: Story Sticks – this workshop invites you to weave a beautiful Story Stick with reflections and memories of your life. Use the sticks and thread provided, or bring your own. This workshop will be led by artist Pamela Schuller.

BIO: Pamela Schuller is an Arts Educator, Community Artist, and Mask Artist with 25+ years experience in mask work, theatre, dance, and puppetry. Pamela explores personal and community development with schools, families, and other special interest groups through creative workshops in mask making, paper-mache sculpture, tapestry, weaving, 3D mural arts, and other mixed media installations.

Acting Up: Monday, July 17, 4–7 PM

Artists: Red Sandcastle Theatre
Workshop: Acting Up: Participate in drama games and story-telling to share the story of your life (real or imagined) and it may be included in a theatrical presentation of Main Stage Monologues during the Main Squared festival. The workshop will be led by Rosemary Doyle, the Artistic Director of Red Sandcastle Theatre.

We will be sharing the stories of our lives using techniques of question and answer, theatre games to think of the events as fruits on the vine, and will pick key moments to explore and dramatize.

“What ifs…” can take a boring day and turn it into something else. Using the technique of improv to build on a story, we will explore the ideas of place and seasons, and the way that changes in our environment change how we see ourselves and the world. Dreams fulfilled, dreams unfulfilled, realities unexpected. Mining the richness of our experiences and opinions for content and clarity. Exploring differing world views.

Piñata Making: Saturday, Aug 26, 12–3 PM

Artist: Vivian Wong
Workshop: Using cardboard templates, craft paper and glue, participants will work in teams to create fun, festive piñatas for Vivian’s You Are Invited event.

BIO: Vivian Wong is an artist, arts educator, and workshop facilitator. As founder of Wabi-Sabi Collective, she has animated spaces for Nuit Blanche Toronto and Culture Days Ontario with interactive and ephemeral public installations and community art. “You Are Invited” is a collaboration with her two children, Daniel and Elisabeth, and is inspired by Elisabeth, who loves many things like art, music, and ballet, but birthday parties and cake most of all. Elisabeth will be in grade 4 in September and Daniel will be in grade 7. Daniel’s first public art project, a snail intervention to draw attention to the unseen and ordinary beauty in the urban wilderness, consisted of hundreds of origami snails and was part of Grow Op 2017 at the Gladstone Hotel.
